The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Preventing Injuries in Sport and Active Leisure provides learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills to work as an employed and/or self-employed sports massage therapist. This qualification is based on massage National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's largest and leading professional association for sport and remedial therapists , The Federation of Holistic Therapists. This qualification is also recognised by the General Council for Soft Tissue Therapies (GCMT), the governing body for massage and soft tissue therapies that form all bodyworks and soft tissue techniques in the UK. The GCMT also represents several professional associations for massage.
Learners who complete this qualification are eligible to become a member of The Federation of Holistic Therapists and/or join any of the professional associations governed by the General Council for Soft Tissue Therapies.
This qualification has been specifically designed to develop the necessary knowledge, understanding and technical skills to prepare learners for employment as a sports massage therapist.
The content of this qualification is comprised of all the required elements to work effectively as a sports massage therapist including: functional anatomy, physiology and nutrition for sports therapies; applying sports massage methods; injuries in sport; customer service, employment rights and responsibilities; understanding the active leisure and learning sector; and field based fitness testing. These units are all mandatory.
Learners will also develop their understanding and skills base by selecting a number of optional units from a range of specialist units which include: applying taping and strapping; applying hot and cold modalities; applied sport and exercise psychology; and sports nutrition. This qualification structure provides learners with the flexibility to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to support their chosen context within the field of sports massage.

Coursework: Home study and portfolio of evidence containing questions and assignment work
Written Exam: 1 Written exam paper

Self-paced home study can be started at anytime and covers
GLH (Guided Learning Hours): 436. (GLH incl’s. practical, coursework, case studies,
assessments) (additional 32 GLH PER optional unit booked)
Group training = No, students will work on each other.
One to one training = Yes, you will be required to bring a model along to the practical
training to practice your routine on.
Case studies = Yes, you will be required to work on models for your case studies.
Fifty hours of sports massage must be documented in your portfolio of evidence.
Evidence must demonstrate application of all massage methods that make up this qualification and must be undertaken on a range of clients (3 or more) in different environments (at least 2).
Under all circumstances massage must only be undertaken on non-pathological (non-injured) tissue.
